The objectives of this paper are to present some of the methods currently available in actual design and to surmise the trend in CFD, mainly from an engineering point of view. (1) Inviscid linear flow The panel method and the vortex lattice method are presently the only methods for analyzing arbitrary practical configurations and, in the past decade since they were developed at KHI, have been the most useful engineering tools available. Although these now approach a relatively mature level, the improvement required for these methods are; (i) Capability of treating more complicated realistic geometries (ii) Development of the resources needed to supply the error-free input data (iii) Extension to the free boundary problem such as leading-edge vortex etc. (2) Inviscid nonlinear flow The vigorous advance of CFD, especially in the transonic regime, has had a strong impact on changing the previous semiempirical design methods to more rational ones and, in consequece, it has shortened the design time and reduced costs considerably. The most promising available codes, which are able to analyze wing-body combinations, are now expected to provide the new technological capability of interpreting the various useful design rules. (3) Separated viscous flow The calculations of Reynold's averaged equations are expected to become effective design tools for evaluating off-design features. It leads to the elimination of oversized margins in design. (4) Conclusions The three groups of numerical methods stated above are expected to make progress more or less in parellel with each other. |
