A general purpose highly parallel computer Cellular Array Processor (CAP) has been developed. The CAP consists of 64 processors configured in a two-dimensional array. Communication between cells is done in two ways: Global communication using a common bus and local communication using inter-cell communication lines. Each cell has video memory for subimage storage. A frame of image data distributed to many cells is displayed directly on a monitor through the video bus. A multi-task real-time operating system called Cell Monitor has been developed for efficient parallel processing. The CAP has been applied to computer graphics. High quality image generation using ray tracing is efficiently performed on the CAP. Performance in ray tracing with 64 cells reaches 80 percent of Fujitsu's M-380 main frame computer. |
