内容記述 This paper describes the background and basic design of the Quiet Short Take-Off and Landing (QSTOL) Research Aircraft. In 1972,the Science and Technology Agency (STA) initiated a three-year feasibility study of the QSTOL transportation system.Based on the study, the STA Advisory Committee recommended development of a QSTOL aircraft. The recommendation is being implemented as the STOL Aircraft Project by the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL),which is a national agency responsible for research and development in the field of aerospace technologies.NAL,in collaboration with main aircraft manufacturers in Japan, organized a design team for the aircraft in 1977,when precedent wind tunnel tests on powered high-lift devices had been being carriee out.NAL facilities such as wind tunnels and flight simulators were fully used to supply technical data necessary for the design. The basic design was completed in 1979.The production is presently in progress, and the first flight is scheduled in 1983.The flight experiments to evaluate and demonstrate the benefit of the QSTOL transportation system will be the goal of the STOL Aircraft Project. The QSTOL Research Aircraft will be based upon the airframe of the C-1 tactical transport with the following modification:replacement of the two Pratt and Whitney JT8D engines by four MITI/NAL FJR-710-600S high bypass ratio turbofan engines, installed above and far ahead of the wing leading edges in nacelles with upper surface blowing (USB); replacement of the existing manually operated ailerons by larger-area flaperons; and installation of a stability augmentation system,a variable stability system and hydraulically operated control system. Thus,it should be mentioned that the QSTOL Research Aircraft is a home grown product with respect to the development and manufacturing processes for these components. From the technical point of view, design innovations are made in the developments of the USB type of powered high-lift system (PHLS) and of the stability and control augmentation system (SCAS).The QSTOL Research Aircraft is designed to perform as follows:the runway length necessary for take-off and landing is less than 800m; 72-knot and γ=-6° approaches and flares are possible with adequate safety margines. As the research aircraft, with its maximum weight of 45 tonnes and a total span of 30.6m,is comparable to civil jet STOL transports with 100-150 passenger seats,we believe that the verification of new STOL technology will contribute much to the development of the STOL transportation system.
