The vibration was detected by the piezoelastic accelerometer mounted on the bearing housing and was recorded by the magnetic tape recorder which was controlled by a microcomputer. In total twenty-seven bearings were tested, and flaking failures were generated in twenty-five bearing, nine on the outer races, nine on the inner races and seven on the balls. In most cases, flaking grew gradually with obvious changes of vibratory characteristics, thus enabling the early detection of the defects in the bearings.
