An optical determination of droplet size distributions of fuel sprays is assessed. The method described is based on the angular variation of scattered-light intensity in the forward lobe. Three inversion methods have been evaluated: Method I makes use of an inversion formula for the integral equation that correlates the distribution function of sprays to the observed scattered-light intensity profiles, I(θ), through the diffraction theory; Methods II and III are based on the least-square approximation of the observed I(θ)θ profiles, the former using a distribution function having two shape parameters, W(D)=CDx1exp(-x2 D), and the latter an unknown “smooth”distribution of finite of freedom. The validity of these inversions is tested with the I(θ)θ or I(θ) profiles theoretically predicted for pseudo sprays having various distribution, and the I(θ)θ profile that has been measured for a dispersion of glass spheres. The applicability of Method I is, in many cases, limited to sprays consisting of rather small droplets (up to about 50 μm for He-Ne beams), since evaluation of the ∂/∂θ(I(θ)θ3)term appearing in the inversion formula becomes erroneous at the larger angles. Method II gives fairly good estimates of Sauter Mean Diameter(SMD) for sprays that one should encounter in practice, even if the type of distribution is not known precisely. Method III is applicable for sprays whose type of distribution is not clarified in advance. The use of the Diffraction theory in place of rigorous Mie theory in the inversions is justified for droplet sizes 30 times larger than the wave length, as is often the case with sprays produced by conventional pressure atomizers, airblast and air-assist atomizers. Some of the merits of using the I(θ)θ profiles instead of the I(θ) profiles are discussed. |
