A method of characteristics and a space-marching shock capturing finite-difference method are compared for the calculations of the flow field of a conical and bell nozzle. It is shown that the method of characteristics, which is the conventional one for nozzle flow calculation, is often met with difficulties due to an ill-spaced characteristic net construction in calculations to proceed downstream, especially in the case of nozzles with small throat radii of curvature. These difficulties make the computer program complex and increase the computational time. On the other hand, the finite-difference method with a concept of shock capturing produces reasonable results within a relatively short time and is a simple procedure compared to the characteristic method.
