Consideration of the turbo-pump power balance of a staged combustion cycle engine shows that improvement in staged combustion cycle engine performance can be attained by an increase in parameter “A”, which is related to the dischange pressure of the turbo-pump; that is, A=ρ(bluk)ηpηtCpTlM(flow rate)t/M(flow rate)T. Preburner performance has been traditionally evaluated by means of C* efficiency and the spatial deviation of temperature. However, these factors do not reflect the variation of“A”and are therefore not suitable for evaluating preburner performance. Therefore, the authors define a new working index of preburner, ηw,PB and propose to use this index as a preburner performance evaluation index. The index ηw,PB is defined as the ratio of the turbine power of the actual preburner gas to the turbine power of the ideal preburner gas, that is, ηw,PB=Wt/Wt.MAX. The proposed index is shown to reflect a variation of the parameter“A”.
