This residual thrust causes some fatal problems to vehicles flying at a high altitude. The present work is to show the theoretical treatment of the mechanism of residual thrust. The heat accumulated in a graphite nozzle and the radiative heat transfer from the heated nozzle were estimated first. The decomposition of the irradiated insulator, which covers the inner surface of the motor case, is analyzed by the asymptotic method with a large activation energy of the thermal decomposition. Then the decomposed gas exhausted through the nozzle to produce the residual thrust is evaluated.
