An experimental study on single-stream and two-stream supersonic mixing layers was made to investigate the effect of compressibility on their mean properties. Free streams on both sides of the two-stream mixing layer had Mach numbers of 2.3 and 1.35 with a velocity ratio of 0.74.One or the other of the streams was blocked for the single-stream experiment. Pitot and static pressure surveys were conducted to deduce mean velocity profiles. Self-similar and linearly spreading flows were established at distances of approximately 100 and 220 times the momentum thickness of separated boundary layer from the beginning point of the mixing layer for the single- and two-stream cases, respectively. It was found that weak compression and expansion waves remaining in a test section have little effect on the spreading. In the single-stream case, spreading rates descreased with increasing free stream Mach number. This tendency agrees not only qualitatively but also quantitatively with the tendency obtained in the majority of the previous experiments. The spreading rate of the two-stream mixing layer was about half of that in the single-stream layer with the same free stream Mach number as the high velocity side. This result agreed with previously obtained spreading rates for incompressible two-stream mixing layers with the same value of velocity ratio. In the present two-stream mixing layer, therefore, it can be concluded that there was no compressibility effect because of the small velocity difference. |
