An experimental study of aerodynamic characteristics of a horizontal axis windmill, rated at 20 KW at 8m/s, with a two-bladed rotor of 14m diameter is described. The blade of the windmill was basically designed so as to vary its geometry in such a way that the aerodynamic efficiency becomes maximum and then was fabricated with minor modifications needed to satisfy structural requirements. To confirm the aerodynamic characteristics of the windmill rotor, a wind tunnel test of a 22% scale model was performed in the NAL low-speed wind tunnel. Measurements were made of the efficiency, torque, axial drag force and initial torque for various combinations of the pitch angle and the tip speed ratio for a zero yaw angle. The data were corrected for the wake blockage effect. The yaw characteristics of the windmill were also measured. The test confirms the very high aerodynamic performance of the windmill rotor. |
