After integration, Doppler Radar measurement gives an estimated horizontal range distance. The estimated range was compared with the measurements of two independent DME systems and yielded two measurement residuals. Each residual includes the measurement noises both of the Doppler Radar system and of the DME system. It was shown that by estimating covariance functions of these residuals, the statistical characteristics of noises which contaminated DME and Doppler Radar measurements could be separately indentified. Using flight test data of NAL’s VSRA, a hardware component of the DME system that had possibly introduced adverse noise into output measurements was detected.
