We made an experimental study of a laminar flow control airfoil with suction through a perforated surface at low speed. The airfoil section was designed to be a natural laminar flow airfoil which can delay the boundary layer transition as far downstream as possible. The effects of suction quantity and the position of sucked area on transition delay were examined. It was found that a very small amount of suction was able to delay the transition from x/c=0.674 to 0.913 and to reduce the profile drag about 18 percent compared with the case of zero suction at Rc of 6.7 × 10(exp 5). It was also observed that application of the suction near and downstream of the natural transition point had a very large effect on delaying the transition point; but on the other hand, application upstream of the point had very little effect. Theoretical calculation based on an equivalent uniform suction assumption showed good agreement with the experimental results. Michel’s criterion, which was originally developed for layers without suction, has given at least qualitatively correct results even for layers with suction. |
