In this paper, the experimental results are presented for the coning motion of slender bodies such as a cone-cylinder or a cylinder model created by the side force at high angles of attack(45deg≦α≦135deg). The free rotation method was utilized to study the coning angular motions of the models. Models were supported free to rotate at their centers of gravity in a low speed wind tunnel. For angles of attack of 45deg ≦α≦90deg (nose-first), a cone-cylinder model shows a steady angular rotation. For the range of 90deg < α < 135deg (base-first), the model shows alternating rotation where the direction of rotation reverses within a certain period of time. |
