内容記述 Tidal channels and coastal sand ridges in Gyunggi Bay, Korea often appear on the SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) images as linear features and shift their location according to the tidal conditions in case of sand ridges. The Gyunggi Bay is located in the eastern part of the Yellow Sea of the western coast of the Korean peninsula and is characterized by macro-tidal regime with a tidal range of 4-8 meters and strong tidal currents flowing northeast in flood and southwest in ebb. Tidal sand ridges are well developed in the bay generally lined up with the long axes of the tidal current ellipses. Various scales of sand ridges are scattered around coast and islands. These sand ridges are composed of relict sediments related to past condition such as Quaternary low stands of sea level, and are considered to be main sand-supplying resources for construction materials in Korea after depletion of most of sand resources in the rivers and beaches. Between these sand ridges, very prominent tidal chanllels are also well developed and some parts of them are exposed during ebb tide.

内容記述 In order to validate that the zones of bright line features in the SAR image of the Gyuuggi Bay are related with the convergence zones of tidal currents, numerical circulation modeling was performed with real bathymetry and boudary conditions of using ROMS (Regional Ocean Modeling System). The intensity of convergence and divergence is calculated based of the continuity equation.

内容記述 The current convergence zones over tidal chanllels and sand ridges, calculated by the ROMS numerical model, coincide with bright line feature zones in the SAR images and this validates the imaging mechanism of bottom topography under water by con-divergence current fields causing surface modulation. Information on the locations and boudaries of sand ridges and tidal channels provided by SAR can reduce greatly the number of ship tracks and the costs of bathymetric surveying for the estimation of the amount of potential sand resources under water.
