現在、地上観測でカタログ化(軌道の明らかなもの)されているテプリの大きさは約10cm以上である。米国を中心に今後大きさ1cm程度までの計測・カタロク化を目指す必要があるという共通認識のもと、観測システムの検出能力向上を目指しているが、課題が多く実現には至っていない。一方、日本では、諸外国に比べ観測システムの規模及び設備数において大きく遅れを取っている。日本では口径数m程度の光学望鏡のような大型観測設備の保有は困難なため、これまで「重ね合わせ法と」いうソフト的技法と用いて、光度で2等級程度検出能力を向上させる技術の研究を行ってきている。この技術により小型望遠鏡でもその仕様以上の検出能力を保有することが可能となった。
