However, the exposure experiments can not be free from induced environments. Contamination from the International Space Station (ISS) produced the most readily change to the SM/MPAC&SEED samples, other than natural environments. Since measured characteristics of retrieved materials are affected by both natural and induced environments, it is difficult to investigate the net effect of natural environments. Energetic particles easily penetrate the contamination layer and their effects are maintained. In contrast, contaminant deposition masks the mass loss by atomic oxygen (AO), and contamination discoloration decorates the net change in sample optical characteristics induced by ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
