This system configuration is simple but this signal is degraded. In this system scheme, the noisy signal received by a spacecraft is simply passed through an onboard low-pass filter after carrier demodulation. Then, it is amplified, modulated onto a downlink carrier, and retransmitted to a ground station. But this amplification is rather dissipative because its input signal is very noisy and the ranging signal is embedded in it. To solve this problem, we have been developing regenerative ranging.
