The amounts of cell wall-bound ferulic (FA) and diferulic acids (DFA) in rice shoots greatly increased from four to six days after planting (Annual Report; Wakabayashi 2004). The activity of PAL per shoot increased by 5-fold from day four to six. There was a close correlation between the FA level and PAL activity. Similarly, the activity of cell wall POD per shoot progressively increased during this period, and the activity changed in parallel with the increase in DFA content.
