Ion heating by electromagnetic waves and magnetic nozzle acceleration of fast-flowing plasma are two key issues for the development of the advanced space thruster. In the HITOP experiments, we have successfully demonstrated these two tasks experimentally. Present status and future tasks of the VASIMR-type plasma thruster is
