The relative motion of one space craft (follower) with respect to another (leader) in a circular orbit is described by nonlinear autonomous diferential equations, and their linearized equations are known as Hill-Clohessy-Wiltshire (HCW) equations. Formation problems are formulated by the periodic solutions of HCW equations. Control inputs are assumed to be pulse inputs of a constant width, and their performance index is the total velocity change. It is shown that there exist optimal three pulse strategies.
