The orbits are not necessarily coplanar, and the spacecraft can change its orbital elements within a wide range using gravity assists. The technique is especially useful for missions targeting high inclinations. However the solution space grows geometrically with the number of gravity assists, and its full exploration during preliminary design is challenging. In this paper we study the problem in general and derive some useful analytical formula and the 3D-Tisserand graph, which is an extension of the famed Tisserand graph.
