In order to land on any surface we want to explore, we need some sort of landing gear which attenuates touchdown impulsive force and turnover moment of the lander. However, conventional landing gears, such as passive landing leg using honey-comb-core, are not sophisticated enough to land safely and precisely on rough terrain. Therefore, the authors propose to introduce active landing leg using variable damper in order to make secure and precise landing on any rough terrain on planetary body. In this paper, numerical simulation of the touchdown is performed by using 2DOF lander model with and without active control and lunar soil mechanics.
