To realize a simpler manufacturing process and to improve retraction performances, a fold and retraction mechanism based on the wrapping membrane around the polygonal center hub with tensile forces are proposed. Hinge mechanisms to determine the initial fold line of the membrane are installed in the center area of membrane to determine the target fold patterns of the membrane. The demonstrations of the conceptual retraction mechanism are performed for octagonal membranes with polygonal hub.
