One of their applications is a membrane aeroshell for atmospheric entry vehicles. This study focuses on the flare-type membrane aeroshell. At first, a system study on the case that a membrane aeroshell is applied to a reusable space transportation system is conducted to clarify its merits and to discuss its feasibility. The group carried out the drop tests of the capsule with the membrane aeroshell from an altitude of 40 km using the large scientific balloons in 2003 and 2004. The stable flight in the subsonic to transonic regime is demonstrated in this test.
