The reel is designed to be applicable to a Space Solar Power System (SSPS), which will employ a number of tethers to attain the gravity-gradient stabilization in its attitude motion passively. Reliable performance of deployment and retrieval of tether is an important factor for the reel to be applicable for the tethered SSPS and experimental study is essential to assure the reliability of the system.
