Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, Sagamihara), Fuel cells, which can generate electricity as long as they are supplied with hydrogen and oxygen, are promising power sources for super-pressure balloons, moon explorations, etc., for which small and light power systems are required. In general, hydrogen and oxygen are excessively supplied to proton exchange membrane fuel cells operating at low temperature in order to prevent reactant starvation and to purge the product water accumulation hindering cell reactions. However, exhausting unreacted reactants reduces efficiency of the system. The fuel cell systems aiming for high-efficiency employ gas recirculation systems in which unreacted reactants expelled from the outlet of fuel cells are recirculated back to the inlet for minimizing wastage of the reactant gases. Conventional recirculation systems use mechanical pumps that consume electrical power with generating vibration and noise. In addition, mechanical components are not preferable from the viewpoint of reliability. Since the major advantages of fuel cells over conventional turbine-based generators are high-efficiency, quietness, nonvibration, etc., employment of mechanical pumps qualitatively cancels such advantages. In this paper, a novel gas recirculation system utilizing pressure swings is proposed to overcome above pump related challenges. The proposed system uses two check valves and a pressure regulator for the recirculation, so that it is considered to be advantageous over conventional systems in terms of simplicity, efficiency, vibration, and reliability. Performance of the proposed system was experimentally verified. Experimental characteristic was similar to the theoretical one, and long-term operation was successfully demonstrated. The proposed recirculation system is considered to be promising not only for aerospace applications but also for terrestrial industries., 資料番号: AA0064295005}, publisher = {宇宙航空研究開発機構宇宙科学研究本部, Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)}, title = {固体高分子形燃料電池における圧力スイングを利用した新しいガス循環システム}, volume = {28}, year = {2009} }
