Spacecrafts ordinarily employ chemical batteries such as Ni-Cd, Ni-MH and Li-ion batteries as their power sources. Chemical batteries which store electricity by chemical reactions, however, have technical problems in the case of the very long term applications. SuperCapacitors (SCs) which are prosperously developed in the civilian field are the energy storage devices without chemical reactions. SCs have long life performances and high rate charge/discharge performances. In recent years, SCs have been applied for EVs (Electric Vehicles), UPSs (Uninterrupted Power Sources), assist power sources and so forth. In the space field, SCs were already applied to the exploration robot 'MINERVA' which was equipped to the interplanetary spacecraft 'Hayabusa (MUSES-C: Asteroid Sample-return Spacecraft)'. SCs received much attention to be applied to the very long term missions such as Space Solar Power Systems (SSPS). SCs are promising not only for commercial applications but also aerospace applications. Main drawback of SCs is that terminal voltages vary directly with stored energies. In order to adequately utilize stored energies of SCs, discharges should be as deep as possible. On the other hand, output voltage of series-connected SCs should be limited within particular range for instruments to perform appropriately. A proposed SC-based spacecraft power system is a combination of dc-dc converter and tap selector. In this paper, the power system which can utilize energies of SCs as much as possible with limiting output voltage variations within particular range is proposed and is experimentally verified using a simple circuit.
