This type vehicle is the only unmanned underwater vehicle which enables vast ocean observation with physical and chemical sensors and wide-detailed sea bottom survey with sonars. One of the key elementary technologies to develop the vehicle is energy source technology. It is the best energy source for underwater vehicle that is Proton-Exchange membrane Fuel Cell (PEFC). A lot of manufactures and universities have been improved PEFC for cars and cogenerations. The configuration of the PEFC for underwater vehicle is different from one of such applications because the PEFC is surrounded by high-pressure seawater and then whole gas and liquid are confined in the system. The aim of the PEFC development is to obtain high efficiency PEFC, not to reduce cost. We have, thus developed and tested a closed-cycle PEFC for the underwater vehicle named Urashima since 1998. The Urashima powered by the PEFC have marked world record of the long range cruising of 317 km in February 2005. In this sea trial the efficiency of 54 percent was also marked. Now we have improved the PEFC to get efficiency of over 60 percent for the next generation underwater vehicle., 資料番号: AA0063965005}, pages = {21--25}, publisher = {宇宙航空研究開発機構宇宙科学研究本部, Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA/ISAS)}, title = {深海探査機用高効率固体高分子型燃料電池MEAの開発状況}, year = {2008} }
