AUVs (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) were considered and chosen, as the most suitable for these tasks. JAMSTEC has started building the long cruising AUV. The plan of the development has a few steps. The first step AUV, named URASHIMA, was built in 1999, the sea-going tests have been held since 2000. URASHIMA cleared its maximum operation depth, 3,500 meter, and reached to 3,518 meter in 2001. In 2002, URASHIMA could cruise 132.5 km autonomously, using lithium-ion battery as its power source. On the other hand, PEFC with the metal Hydrogen storage has been developed for expanding its cruising range. The power source has been changed from the lithium-ion battery to the fuel cell since autumn of 2002. The long cruising schedule will be reopened from the spring of 2003, and be tried to swim through 300 km autonomously.
