However, it was indirect observation. It has been suggested that is a diode laser energy transmission system to supply a lunar rover for direct observation at the bottom of craters in the lunar polar region, where no sun light all the year and it is in a severe cold environment. A full-size model of a lunar rover using a laser energy transportation has been fabricated and 100 m energy transportation test has been successfully performed. The high power laser diodes commercially available are composed of about 20 small laser diode spots arranged in an array with a spacing of 250 micrometers. Each spot is about 1 micrometer x 100 micrometers and the beam divergence of 35 deg x 11 deg. The laser diode being used is also the same and an array of small micro-lenses are arranged in front of the spot array to obtain a parallel beam. For 100 m transmission, a micro-lens array in front of the laser diode spots is sufficient to get a beam divergence of 12 mrad x 12 mrad. In the actual lunar exploration, at least 5 km transmission is required. The rover shall receive with a solar panel of a size less than 1 m so that the beam divergence of 2 x 10(exp -4) rad is required. So a small emitting area laser diode must be used. These device are used on CD or DVD drive. The size of the emitting area is about 1 x 3 micrometers. It is useful to energy transportation, if a large number of the laser diode are used.
