Technical Memorandum of National Aerospace Laboratory
A theory for designing ion thrusters is described for the following two purposes. Firstly, to share the information required to design ion thrusters with people with minimal knowledge of ion thrusters. Secondary, to show how much influence the partial designing has on the overall performance of the ion thruster. The information provided is not limited to our original information and many references are included. As is generally the case in designing, the theory is not perfectly objective. The pursuit of objectivity is generally difficult and not always worth the labor. The principle of ion thruster operation and a definition of its performance are described here. This is followed by designing of basic parameters and individual parts. Selection of material and dimensions are described for some parts. Developing reliable ion thrusters or those with greater performance requires experiments at each phase of designing. Evaluation of ion thrusters, however is not described in this material. This will be described in another paper.
