Refined developments in a damping meter for measuring aerodynamic derivatives by a free oscillation technique are described. The apparatus directly measures the logarithmic decrement and frequency in digital form, resulting in an increased efficiency of experimentation and improved experimental accuracy. A special phase difference network in the apparatus is analyzed with the signal of the decaying oscillation, and the expected systematic error factors are estimated. Our results show that the error in frequency can be kept within 0. 5%, and the error in small logarithmic decrement can easily be reduced to 2% by repeating the measurements. Further practical applications using the damping meter are shown.
