Wind tunnel test model is generally sting-mounted and forces acting on the model are measured using internal force sensors. In order to avoid any interference of the support on the flow field, magnetic suspension and balance system (MSBS) suspends the model magnetically. Six components of the forces can be measured simultaneously by calculating from coil currents required for the levitation. MSBS also enables to measure unsteady forces while the model is moving dynamically in space. JAXA's Fluid Dynamcs Group started MSBS research on 1986, independently developed the present system, and succeeded in the world's first full 6 degree-of-freedom (DOF) control and simultaneous 6-DOF force measurement. It has the world's largest test section and has been in practical use since 2000.
