A main reason of it is said that the lunar tidal stress might become larger at the deep moonquake zone than other depths where they do not occur. Tidal stress distribution in the lunar interior was calculated using a lunar structure model that has a liquid-iron core of various sizes and the crust/mantle structure obtained by Nakamura et al. (1982). The result indicates that the sigma(sub r-theta) and sigma(sub r-phi) components of the tidal stress have peaks at depths of 700 to 1,400 km, if the assumed core radius is 300 to 600 km. This depth distribution of sigma(sub r-theta) and sigma(sub r-phi) can explain why deep moonquakes occur at such a deep zone in the lunar interior, if deep moonquakes are controlled by the sigma(sub r-theta) and sigma(sub r-phi) components of the tidal stress. Also calculated was the selenographical distribution of the tidal stresses at the depth of 900 km. When a maximum tidal stress component was plotted along six stress components, the lunar globe is qualitatively divided into six zones which are dominated by sigma(sub r-r), sigma(sub r-phi), sigma(sub phi-phi), sigma(sub r-theta), sigma(sub theta-phi), and sigma(sub theta-theta), respectively. It is remarkable that the deep moonquakes are concentrated in the sigma(sub r-theta)-dominated zone.
