The result of measurement of the energy distribution function below 2 eV of thermal electrons in the ionosphere in January 31, 1979 at 11.00 a.m. is shown in the height range between 80 km and 184 km. The measurement was done by a probe borne by an S-310-5 rocket. The electron temperature was about 50 meV at 90 to 120 km and increased by 50 meV/20 km above 120 km. Actually, however, a slight shift from Maxwellian is noticeable at all heights from the semi-log plot of the second derivative of probe characteristic. Especially, around 150 km a bump is seen at about 0.5 eV with an energy width of the order of 50 meV, which might be due to some special collisional processes. |
