X-ray emission from the Virgo cluster of galaxies was mapped in 1-dimension with the Large Area Counters on board Ginga. It was discovered that the X-ray emission extends to about 5 degrees from M87. In this paper the discovery of the extended X-ray emission is reported and its implications for observational cosmology are discussed. |
