We have studied about the mental aspects of 100 cases of injury accidents, which had been happened at the machine factory of the Japanese Government Railway during about one year (1934-1935). The 100 accidents were to be classified as follows: (1) Accidents, which are caused from the unwillingness of the workers to take any routine procedures which are required for the working, that is; a) The workers do not use the crane, notwithstanding of its necessity. b) They do not use adequate instruments. c) They do not utilize the safty equipments. d) They would not ask for the assistance of their fellow-workers, when it is needed. (2) Accidents, which occur because the workers save the troubles of, a) Adequate preparations, and b) Maintenance of heavy tools and materials in good order. (3) Accidents owing to inadequate or undue methods of working. (4) Accidents owing to the lack of attention to the circumstances of the work-shops. (5) Accidents owing to the lack of adequate cooperation. The mental aspects of accidents are as follows: (1) Most of the workers anticipate no danger about their work or the circumstances. (2) Some of them feel something dangerous in it, but they do not take it seriously, or they are not willing to change their methods of working. As the results of our study, the causes of accidents are considered to be consisted in the following conditions: (1) the insufficiency of the experience of the workers (2) the lack of attention because of the fact that they are acquainted to the work too much. (3) They are possesed with their previous experiences. (4) They work absentmindedly. (5) They work in a hurry. (6) The circumstances of their work-shops are different from that of ordinary conditions. (7) The absence of needed tools, instruments and fellow-workers about them. In many cases, the accidents did not occur in their main work, but in subsidiary work, in preparations, or in those which are not of their own. |
