This paper is concerned with the job processing method in computer systems. Firstly, we find fault with job processing by means of the conventional scheduler, and point out the fact that utilization of the central processing unit (CPU) is too sensitive to the input job-stream. This is the reason it is difficult to retain constantly high CPU utilization in keeping with the increasing throughput of the short job-class. Secondly, a new job processing method promising to solve this problem, which we shall call the job/job-step scheduler, is proposed. The main concept is to schedule a job or a job-step so that a number of so-called CPU-bound job-steps may always be in a state for immediate processing by CPU. In order to make the new scheduling possible, the operating systems must have the following job-processing capability:all job-steps setting up the job shall not necessarily be processed sequentially;it should be possible to halt the job processing temporarily at some job-step stage for preparation of the pool of CPU-bound job-steps. Thirdly, we describe the skeleton of the simulator which was programmed to evaluate the performance of the job/job-step scheduler in an application for job processing with the NAL computer system. Finally, the results of the simulation experiment are given to illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed scheduler. |
