Flow visualization study on the flow field around the trailing edge of an NACA 0012 airfoil under heaving and/or pitching motion was carried out using a water towing tank. Special emphasis is placed on the discussion of the applicability of the Kutta condition to the unsteady airfoils. Based on the generalized Bernoulli equation and the Kelvin theorem on the conservation of the vorticity, the detailed mechanims of the vorticity shedding from the unsteady airfoil and its eventual roll up into a vortex street were fluid-dynamically clarified. Thus the aerodynamic characteristics such as the stall delay or the dynamic stall phenomena have been discussed, a generalization of the Kutta condition to the unsteady airfoil has been done.
