The performance of a high efficiency switching mode voltage regulator for satellite use is investigated. A blocking oscillator with a mesa type Si power transistor, is used as the switching unit. The off-time in the switching sequence is controlled by the error signal, which is obtained by comparing the output voltage to a reference voltage. Since the on-time is kept constant the duty ratio of the switching wave form varies and the filtered output of the switched voltage is regulated to a fixed value (+12V). The repetition frequency of the switching oscillator changes between 5 kc/s and 10 kc/s corresponding to the input voltage variation between 15V and 25V. The overall efficiency of this circuit is about 90%, and the contributions of each components or units to the power loss are estimated as follows: a) Loss in the switching element: 3% b) Loss in the smoothing filter: 1.2% c) Loss in the error detecting circuit: 2.0% d) Loss in the off-time control transistor: 3.8% Several modifications of high efficiency Switching mode voltage regulator are also suggested. |
