A launch method using rollers to hold a balloon was effectively applied to the launching of balloons with relatively small lift, but we experienced difficulties when appling it to the launching of heavy payloads. This paper discusses a new static-launch method developed recently in ISAS, which improved the capability for heavier payloads significantly. The main procedure is to extend a whole balloon vertically upon the launcher before release, with squeezing the top bubble of the balloon by a soft collar of air-filling type. Only the bottom portion of a balloon is held by the launcher, so the main part of the balloon is never damaged by the holding mechanism of the launcher. The new method was successfully applied to the launching of 15 balloons, in 1981,ranging from 5,000m^3 to 50,000m^3 with the total lift from 150kg to 640kg. |
