In many cases of instrumentation, it is necessary to measure the center frequency of narrow-band random signals, and a way utilizing an autocorrelator has been suggested. In this method, the input signals are quantized in proper steps and are used for calculating the autocorrelation function. The center frequency of input signals is obtained from the zero crossing points of the autocorrelation function. The quantization steps are determined by considering both accuracies and the complexity of the actual circuits. Though the 2-level quantization has been employed and it gives the simplest circuits, it suffers from the lowered accuracy due to the signal fluctuations and phase disturbances in the range of small signal amplitudes. In this paper, the analysis of measuring error for 2-level and 3-level quantization was done and the results are compared with each other. This shows that 3-level quantization gives far more accurate measurement of center frequencies of narrow-band random signals than 2-level quantization with little penalty of circuit complexity. |
