Two-dimensional semi-circular cylinders have been tested over a Reynolds number range from 67,000 to 600,000 and over angles of attack of ±90deg, to measure pressure distributions and to deduce forces, stagnation, separation and other characteristics. Tests were conducted in the NAL instrument wind-tunnel, the NAL gust wind-tunnel and the Fuji Heavy Industries fume wind-tunnel. The wind-tunnel-boundary correction was specialized by the concept of effective model-height and wake-width. Below an angle of attack of 40deg, pressure distributions about the upper- and lower-surface were similar to the circular cylinder and the flat plate respectively and showed considerable difference between sub- and super-critical Reynolds number. The lift and drag coefficient range were -0.85 ~ 1.5, 0.4 ~ 2.28 at sub-critical and 0 ~ 2.02, 0.1 ~ 2.37 at super-critical. Features were as follows : Near -60deg, suction peak and lift coefficients were extraordinarily high at super-critical. Near 0deg, force coefficient curves, except the chord force, were concave. Near 25deg, lift coefficient showed a maximum value of 2.02 at super-critical Reynolds number. At 40deg ~ 50deg, upper suction double peak and negative chord force (but 5deg ~ 50deg at super-critical) were shown. At 60deg ~ 90deg, pressure distributions over the upper surface showed a low hat shape. |
